Since these parks are dedicated to dogs and created with their needs in mind, they're perfect when you need a way to enjoy some time outdoors with your pup. Dog parks make it easy to let your dog exercise while giving them some freedom, all while they get to interact with new canine friends. Lincoln Drive Park If you already know the Greenway, you know that there's really something for everyone here. That includes dog owners thanks to Lincoln Drive Park. This off-leash dog park sits west of Belmont Road and 13th Avenue South, providing a safe and legal way to exercise your pet off-leash while still staying in the Grand Forks city limits. The park boasts two fenced areas in order to accommodate both small and large dogs, making it the perfect place to bring your pet no matter how big or small they are. You can visit the park between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., so it's incredibly easy to access, too. While dogs are allowed off-leash in designated dog areas, keep in mind that they cannot enter other areas if not kept on a leash, and you'll need to carry a leash at all times. You are also required to leash your dog before entering or leaving the park. If maintenance crews are working in the park, you'll have to keep your dog leashed as well. You must stay with your dog in the dog park at all times. Circle of Friends Animal Shelter You can also use a dog park at the Circle of Friends Animal Shelter. The shelter offers a dog park that is open to the public. This is also an off-leash dog park, though you'll have to keep your pet on a leash when entering and exiting the play area. The park is open every day from dawn to dusk. Trails and Green Spaces Whether you're into hiking, nature trips, or other ways to enjoy the great outdoors, there's plenty to do and see close to home. Fortunately, many of these areas are also ideal for dogs. The Greenway The Greenway offers so many opportunities for fun for dogs and their human companions, it warrants its own entry. As one of 12 regional library systems found in Minnesota, the Northwest Regional Library (NWRL) serves several counties, including Kittson, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake, and Roseau. All these counties combine to have a population of almost 50,000 residents, all of whom the library supports. Within these five counties, the NWRL has seven full-time libraries and two LINK libraries, which are only open 20 hours a week. The seven libraries are found in the following cities: Greenbush Hallock Red Lake Falls Roseau Thief River Falls Warren Warroad The two LINK libraries are found in Karlstad and Grygla. If you're looking for the NWRL headquarters, head over to the Thief River Falls location at 210 LaBree Ave. N. You will find delivery services, information technology, and technical processing operations here. What Services Does the Library System Have? Not only can you check out materials at your home library, but you can request items at one of the other eight regional libraries. The NWRL has a delivery system that transfers materials twice a week. Every Tuesday and Friday, a delivery van picks up and drops off requested items to the other locations. In total, this 300-mile round-trip journey occurs no matter the weather. The system also offers a variety of research resources available to you, all for free. Throughout the year, each library branch hosts specific programs to encourage its patrons to use its services. A few of these programs include the following: Summer reading program: This program concentrates on helping elementary children practice their reading skills when on summer break. They can receive incentives based on the number of books they've read. Winter reading program: Geared toward adults, this program features contests, reading goals, and prizes. Teen programs: Middle school students attend these in-person programs geared toward their interests. Book clubs: Adults who enjoy reading books can meet and share their thoughts on specific tomes. Outreach programs: Several of the branch libraries offer these programs, which include book exchanges and storytimes. Family nights: All branch libraries remain open late one night a week so families can use the library together. Special programming is offered twice per month. What New Services Does the Library System Offer? Some of the other available features the NWRL implemented within the last year include the following: Creativebug: In February 2021, The NWRL partnered with Creativebug, which offers online arts and crafts instructional videos. NWRL library cardholders in good standing can receive free on-demand access to a collection of more than 1,000 arts and crafts classes for a variety of levels. All classes are taught by experts, and new classes are added daily. Chromebook rental: In January 2021, the NWRL announced it would introduce 11 Chromebook laptops for circulation. The laptops run on Google's Chrome Operating System and are available to NWRL residents with a valid library card. The laptops automatically delete content saved to them, so users are advised to save their data via a USB flash drive or cloud storage. The Chromebooks are due 14 days after checkout, but they can be renewed two times as long as nobody else has placed a hold on them. Mobile Wi-Fi hot spots: Also in January 2021, the NWRL began to offer mobile Wi-Fi hot spots for NWRL residents with a valid library card. The hot spots allow internet connections anywhere patrons can get a signal via the Sprint Network, and up to 10 devices can be connected. Just like the Chromebooks, they're due 14 days after checkout but can be renewed twice. Only one hot spot can be checked out at a time. Brainfuse: The NWRL stated in June 2020 that it launched Brainfuse, which is a three-part on-demand eLearning platform for all ages. BrainfuseHelpNow offers personalized homework help in core subjects as well as SAT preparation. It also has an adult learners' version where they access resume assistance, career resources, and GED prep. BrainfuseJobNow supports every step of the job search process including coaching and job interview prep. BrainfuseVetNow helps veterans through academic tutoring and career assistance. How Can You Get a Library Card? If you're a resident of the Northwest Region, you can apply for a library card at any of the nine locations or online. If you reside out of the state or in Canada, you can purchase a non-resident library card for an annual fee of $30. Also, students studying at a local college can apply for a card at no fee. For online cards, fill out the form with your name, address, phone number, email address, and your home library location. After you hit submit, you will receive access to the digital collections through Hoopla and Overdrive for up to three months. After the three months have ended, the NWRL will contact you and request that you bring in proof of residency to your library. Once your residence is verified, you will receive a physical library card and have access renewed. About 50 minutes from Thief River Falls, this uninterrupted path connects the towns of Ulen, Twin Valley, Gary, Fertile, and Crookston. If you walk the entire path, you will cross the South Branch Wild Rice River, Coon Creek, Sand Hill River, Wild Rice River, and Mashaug Creek. For further exploration, you can traverse through the adjacent state parks, such as the Syre State Wildlife Management Area or the Vangsness State Wildlife Management Area. This naturally surfaced trail is perfect for hiking, but it can also be used for bicycling, horseback riding, and ATV riding. During the winter season, bring along your skis and snow machine for some cross-country skiing or snowmobiling. River Walk Hike, bike, cross-country ski, or snowshoe over the scenic River Walk nature trail. This historic walk runs alongside the Thief River and Red Lake River. It was built by the City of Thief River Falls, Northland Community & Technical College, and Pennington County, along with a partnership with the Zehlians of the General Federation of Women's Club (GFWC). The River Walk begins at Centennial Park and ends at Oakland Park, winding through a system of grassy lanes known as the Northland Trails. Along the River Walk trail, you will notice pictographs that show you historical pictures of the rivers. This paved path takes you through nine parks and three forest trails. At the end of the trail is an optional loop that leads you through the Greenwood Trails Recreation Area, a 48-acre wooded trail system that is known as one of the best-kept secrets of Thief River Falls. Lake Bronson State Park Located 55 miles from Thief River Falls, Lake Bronson State Park offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating, camping, and several nature trails for walking or hiking. While walking through these rustic and gravel-packed trails, you may spot deer, black bears, sharp-tailed grouse, sandhill cranes, and wild elk from local herds. In the summer, take advantage of one of the many walking, bicycling, or horseback riding trails. A self-guided 1.5-mile trail runs right alongside Lake Bronson. For longer hikes, try the 14-mile path that winds around the lake. This trail was created using hard-packed gravel, so be sure to bring along your infant or toddler in their stroller for a casual walk or a healthy jog. There is also a 2-mile paved bike path, a 5-mile mountain biking trail, and an 8-mile horseback riding path. During the winter months, bring along your snow machine for a ride through the 3-mile snowmobile trail. This groomed trail also connects to other snowmobile routes, making it easy for you to keep riding all day long. Turtle River State Park Loop The Turtle River State Park Loop is a large walking trail that winds around the Turtle River State Park. While Turtle River State Park is quite a distance west of Thief River Falls, this long loop offers amazing views of the local flora and fauna and several trails to explore within the loop itself. These shorter trails include heavily wooded paths or open prairie expanses that wind right along the Turtle River. While strolling through the loop, you'll come across three bridges that cross over this waterway. Be sure to grab some photos of the beautiful river and its incredible wildlife. As mentioned above, there are several shorter trails that meander off the state park loop. This allows you to explore various areas of the state park every time you visit. Each of the trails is well-maintained and most are very doable for people of all exercise capabilities. Maps are available to help keep you going in the right direction, but if you don't have a map, no worries. All trails are marked with visible and clear signage. If you enjoy the peaceful scenery of wooded paths, take the Moose Head Trail, River View Trail, Fisher Loop, or Timber Loop. For a more open experience through the prairie, try the Eco Loop or the Coneflower Loop. Along with the forests and prairies, you may also come across waterfalls and a variety of birds and wildlife. You may also bring your dog along for the walk as long as they are fastened to a leash. Bottineau Trail Bottineau Trail is an asphalt-paved rail-trail that runs through Red Lake Falls and is only a short 20-minute drive from Thief River Falls. During the warmer months you can walk, hike, jog, or bicycle, and in the winter you can snowmobile or cross-country ski. This trail is named after Pierre Bottineau, a frontiersman from Minnesota who died in the community in 1895. The southern half of Bottineau Trail runs alongside a few residential neighborhoods of Red Lake Falls, offering easy access to various downtown shops and restaurants. The northern half of the route offers a more scenic hike through dense forest and vegetation. This path crosses over both Red Lake and Clearwater River via two restored train bridges. If you end or begin your hike at the nearby Riverside Park, you can enjoy a picnic or restroom break before you get started or upon your return. Schumacher Park's Hill Avenue Outdoor Ice Rink is a great place to take your stick and puck for a pick-up game of hockey. The other rink is Leistikow Park's Outdoor Skating Rink, which includes a warming house next to the rink. If you want to play hockey, avoid this one, as sticks and pucks are not allowed. 2. Visit a Leistikow Park Besides being home to an outdoor rink, Leistikow Park is full of fun things to do in the winter and summer. During the winter, you can hit the cross-country ski trails. They have ski or snowshoe rentals available at the office that let you rent your equipment and then head out for the day. If you don't want to ski, you can always take a walk as well. Turtle River State Park is home to over 12 miles of trails along the river, so there are also many places to explore. All that to say, our own library is part of a grand tradition. The early 20th century marked a busy period in terms of library building in North Dakota, with 13 Carnegie libraries constructed between the years 1901 and 1916. The Carnegie Foundation required three key things back then in order to give funding to an area: An area needed a library. The location needed to be secured with annual funding. That funding needed to equal the amount of the grant. Grafton citizens wrote a letter to ask for a grant in March of 1902. In the letter, they requested a grant that would not exceed $10,000 for their library structure. Then, Grafton's citizens started a campaign, ultimately raising $1,240. Construction began soon after, and the library opened for the first time on Jan. 28, 1904. Image via Unsplash by matias_north The Grafton Branch — North Dakota's First Library! The amazing history of libraries in Grafton actually dates back even further than January of 1904. In fact, in addition to being the first city in North Dakota to have a Carnegie library, Grafton was the first place in the state to create a free public library and reading room. The public library and reading room were established way back in 1896. That's not the last of Grafton's list of library firsts, though. Grafton was also the first place to combine a bookmobile library's services with a city library in order to form a multi-county and multi-city library region. Grafton's Carnegie Regional Library can boast yet another first: It was the first library in North Dakota to receive Department of Defense funds during the ballistic missile years. The Carnegie Regional Library Continues To Grow The Carnegie Regional Library received a grant from the federal government and the Oscar Monson estate, which allowed the library to start working on adding to the library in 1970. Throughout the years since the library has changed, but the Carnegie Regional Library maintains that feeling of home it has always provided. Since its start more than 100 years ago, our library has offered a place for reading, education, and more. Current Offerings at the Library So, what can you find when you visit the Carnegie Regional Library today? Get your library card out to enjoy the range of services the local library provides. You can access public computers at the library as well as services for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. Need to get something laminated? You can do that here, too. This library offers a notary public, making that process very convenient for locals. The library also offers proctoring services. You can even find genealogy services here. Our library provides a one-stop shop for checking items off your to-do list, so if you don't yet have a library card, now is the time to get one! The Carnegie Regional Library also offers access to online services that open up a world of opportunities to library card holders, all from the comfort of home. Take Mango Languages, for example. You can sign into the service via the Carnegie Regional Library site, then start learning that language you've always dreamed of speaking. The learning app gives you various exercises that help you master vocabulary and grammar skills along with cultural notes to create context and deepen your understanding. It's a great way to brush up on skills you learned in school or start learning a new language, and the Carnegie Regional Library makes it possible for you to get started with the service. Of course, you're not alone if the first thing you think of when you hear the word "library" is books. The Carnegie Regional Library has never lost sight of that central mission. Today, the course catalog boasts a wide range of titles. You'll find plenty of popular books as well as young adult, early and middle grade, and children's illustrated books available. Early explorers in the area translated the name incorrectly, thinking it meant "Bad Spirit." That, combined with various legends about lake monsters and drowned warriors, gave the large natural lake its current moniker. The lake stretches for over 100,000 acres, boasting hundreds of miles of shoreline, so you're sure to find something to love when you visit Devils Lake. Not sure where to start? Walking and Hiking Around Devils Lake There's no better way to explore the outdoors than with a hike, and you'll find ample opportunities for hikes around Devils Lake. Head to Graham's Island State Park for walking trails amidst gorgeous scenery, or go to White Horse Hill for hiking trails and the chance to spot some wildlife. Pro-tip: Don't miss the overlook from White Horse Hill, where you'll discover breathtaking views of the hill and lake. Looking for a walk in a more urban setting? You can go to Roosevelt Park for a walking and biking path right in town. You also won't want to miss strolling through the downtown area of Devils Lake. Though less nature-based than our other recommendation, Downtown Devils Lake lets you take a walk through history while enjoying the fresh air (and getting in your daily steps!). You'll find a number of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Episcopal Church made of locally gathered fieldstone. Bird-watching Opportunities Abound in Devils Lake If you're into bird-watching, you're in for a treat. The Devils Lake Basin boasts a huge array of wildlife species — and plenty of public lands from which to view them. So, what draws our feathered friends here? Our area is part of the Prairie Pothole Region, which includes wetlands interspersed with grassland habitats. The basin also features hardwood deciduous forests, which are unusual on the prairie. The result is a truly unique natural wonderland with a mix of lakes and wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. That landscape contributes to the richness of birds in the area. And that's good news for bird-watching enthusiasts! Public lands you can visit in the Devils Lake Basin include Lake Alice National Wildlife Refuge and White Horse Hill National Game Preserve. Get out those binoculars, then plan a day taking in the amazing birds that call the Devils Lake area home. White Horse Hill We've mentioned White Horse Hill more than once here, and it warrants its own special shout-out. If you love exploring the great outdoors, you'll have so much to do when you visit White Horse Hill. Start by checking out the various displays at the visitor center before moving to the outdoor features. You'll find an outdoor amphitheater with programs focused on culture, history, and the environment as well as outdoor classrooms for study of wildlife and conservation. In addition to hiking and nature trails complete with interpretive stops, the area includes cross-country ski trails you can use during winter. Then there are those overlooks, where you can take in picturesque views of Devils Lake as well as the varied habitats in White Horse Hill National Wildlife Refuge. The wildlife alone is reason to visit White Horse Hill when you're exploring the outdoors in the Devils Lake area. While you're here, watch out for an impressive array of species, including: Bald and golden eagles. Bison. Elk. Foxes. Fox squirrels and gray squirrels. Mink. Muskrats. Prairie dogs. Raccoons. Rabbits. Shorebirds. Skunks. Songbirds. Waterfowl. Weasels. White-tailed deer. Woodchucks. World-Famous Fishing in Devils Lake Finally, you can't talk about exploring the outdoors here without talking about Devils Lake fishing! As the largest natural lake in North Dakota, Devils Lake boasts an array of fishing opportunities for any skill level. You'll find things to do in any season at Devils Lake, too. Fish from the shores of one of the bays, or venture out in a boat you rent. Have your own boat? You can use that, too. You can even fish on the ice in colder weather. Devils Lake is such a great fishing spot because it's a fertile prairie lake. The lake boasts large numbers of white bass, northern pike, and walleye — and, of course, plenty of perch. Known as the "Perch Capital of the World," Devils Lake has been ranked among the top fishing lakes in the United States.
