Named the best compact SUV by U.S. News and World Report, the 2021 Honda CR-V is about as close as you’ll get to the total package. As the best-selling Honda SUV, the CR-V is compact in name only as it boasts an impressive cargo hold and expansive interior. Available in four trims (LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring), the CR-V is the perfect vehicle for family road trips and adventures. Use this guide to learn more about the CR-V’s dimensions and how you can maximize the space for passengers and cargo.

Exterior Dimensions

Since its inception more than two decades ago, the CR-V has experienced a few updates. For that model year, the SUV underwent an exterior facelift, increasing the vehicle’s length. It now has a size similar to that of the Toyota RAV4. The 2021 CR-V models keep the same numbers as the outgoing model:

  • Front-wheel drive wheelbase: 104.8 inches.
  • All-wheel drive wheelbase: 104.7 inches.
  • Length: 182.1 inches.
  • Front-wheel drive height: 66.1 inches.
  • All-wheel drive height: 66.5 inches.
  • Max width: 73.0 inches.
  • Front width: 63.0 inches.
  • Rear width: 63.7 inches.

All CR-V trims come standard with front-wheel drive, but you can select all-wheel drive on all vehicles if you need extra power. As you can see, the numbers are similar between the two. Also, this SUV boasts a curb weight of 3,337 pounds for front-wheel drive and 3,455 pounds for all-wheel drive models. These numbers make the CR-V one of the lightest in its class, allowing you to save money on gas and achieve better fuel economy.

The CR-V has 7.8 inches of ground clearance for front-wheel drive vehicles, while all-wheel drive models have 8.2 inches. This gives the SUV an advantage over sedans as it can traverse through tough everyday obstacles and inclement weather.

After its refresher last year, the CR-V is slightly more muscular due to the absence of a sloping rear roofline. It has less chrome than in the past, almost having a more reserved appearance. It has an updated front end, enhanced by a new bumper and blackout grille. Its long and wide stance also includes aggressive wheel designs.

The SUV now has larger openings for the fog lights. The three upper trims receive new round LED fog lights as well as a power moonroof and rear privacy glass. Multi-reflector halogen headlights come standard, while the Touring gets LED headlights. When it comes to wheels, the base trim has 17-inch alloy ones, while the two middle trims come with 18-inch wheels. If you want the largest wheels available, go with the Touring as it has 19-inch machine-finished ones.

Interior Dimensions

Perfect for family adventures, the 2021 Honda CR-V has a spacious and comfortable cabin with 105.9 cubic feet of passenger space in the LX trim. The dimensions for the LX trim are as follows:

  • Front headroom: 40.1 inches.
  • Front legroom: 41.3 inches.
  • Rear headroom: 39.2 inches.
  • Rear legroom: 40.4 inches.
  • Front hip room: 55.1 inches.
  • Rear hip room: 49.5 inches.
  • Front shoulder room: 57.9 inches.
  • Rear shoulder room: 55.6 inches.

The other three trims provide 102.9 cubic feet of space, which breaks down as follows:

  • Front headroom: 38.0 inches.
  • Front legroom: 41.3 inches.
  • Rear headroom: 39.1 inches.
  • Rear legroom: 40.4 inches.
  • Front hip room: 55.1 inches.
  • Rear hip room: 49.5 inches.
  • Front shoulder room: 57.9 inches.
  • Rear shoulder room: 55.6 inches.

This makes for a stylish and spacious interior, especially when you include quality materials and a familiar layout.

Seating

Honda finds ways to stretch interior space further than most, allowing you to ride comfortably within the CR-V. No matter what trim level you choose, five people can sit easily across two rows of seats. Its two front seats give you plenty of support, which comes in handy during long road trips. The second row boasts more than 40 inches of legroom, so even taller travelers can stretch their legs. If you’re bringing along younger children, there are LATCH points in all three seating positions.

High-quality materials found within the classy cabin accent the vehicle’s sharp design. Standard features include durable cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, but there are numerous upgrades available. The EX trim adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with four-way power-lumbar support.

For additional luxury, select the EX-L trim, which includes leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and driver’s seat memory settings. The top-of-the-line Touring trim has a heated steering wheel.

Cargo Space

The CR-V leads its class in cargo volume and luggage space, which is impressive since the previous generation was already one of the most spacious in its class. Behind the second row of seats, you get almost 40 cubic feet of storage space.

With the simple pull of a lever, you can easily fold down the 60/40 split-folding rear seats to give you 75.8 cubic feet of space. That volume is typically what you would find in a midsize SUV such as the Pilot. This rear cargo area has a two-tier setup, which allows the floor to remain flat or be set lower to keep items secure.

Another option is to use the hidden storage bin underneath the carpeted floor to store more items. All trims have numerous storage bins scattered throughout the cabin to store smaller items. You can also use the large door pockets and a deep center console. The three upper trims include a seatback pocket on the passenger side. The SUV also includes a low leftover height, which makes it easier for you to load heavier items into it.
